Naturopathic Perspective!
IBS has a high component of stress impact. Often diagnosis follows a stressful event in your life such as a divorce, death, etc. When you get stressed and or extremely anxious and your muscles begin to spasm, the same thing is going on internally. Your colon is a muscle just like any other muscle and will spasm under stress causing it not to function well and IBS symptoms develop.
Our gut contains our “second brain”, hence when you are under stress or anxious people will experience “butterflies” in their stomach and often develop diarrhea or loose bowels from the stress. Imagine experiencing this all the time, and hence IBS is diagnosed!
